"The Cup of God's Wrath"

Not Enough Options

While attending Engineering College, I was growing in my awareness of biblical truth and theology. I remember as if it was yesterday having informal debates with my classmates and professors about the nature of life, death, heaven and hell. On one occasion I declared that there is only one true way to God and heaven, through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We were all close friends by this time and there was free and open communication. Yet, the response from one of my friends was a simple, “there aren’t enough options.”  In other words, there must be other choices.

Different Gospels

People today are just like my friends back in college. They want options, yet what they really want is what we will call the ‘Gospel of Me’ option. I recently listened to a message from John Neufeld (Back to the Bible), in which he spoke about the false gospel of ‘man centered’ religion. He said that people can never see the falsehood of a man-centered gospel until they fully see the holiness and purity of a righteous, holy God who is the only true One worthy of our worship.

Only One Gospel

We are given one Gospel.  There is only one way, and in Revelation 14 John says that we are either drinking the cup of God’s wrath (righteous indignation against unrighteousness) or accepting the gospel of grace that declares that Jesus the Christ drank the cup of God’s wrath in our place.

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not my will but Yours be done (Luke 22:42).

God’s wrath is a topic that gets far too little air-time in our churches. This is likely because we often see God’s wrath as being much like our own self-centered sinful anger. Nothing could be further from the truth. God’s Holiness is the very basis for our eternal salvation, for heaven and for the eternal Kingdom. Without His holiness and purity, we would have no hope because there would have been no substitutionary death and bodily resurrection of Jesus the Messiah. God’s purity, His righteousness and His holiness are the very foundation of our salvation and there is a marvelous joy and delight for all who receive His holiness in Christ.

God is Love

It is often said “if God is love, how could He allow people to experience hell.” It is precisely because of His great love that He calls us to turn away from hell and accept by faith the truth that Christ drank this cup of wrath for us.

May God bless you as you remember His death and resurrection this Easter.
