The Holy Spirit and Church Renewal/Revival

holy spirit.jpgThis past January, I joined a team that travelled to Steinbach Manitoba to experience a Church Renewal weekend. For four days, we experienced what God is doing in the lives of the people at Southland Church. For the past two decades, they have walked with God, demonstrating life in the Spirit through confession, prayer, worship, and transformational obedience to God’s Word.

Pastor Ray Duerksen and his wife Fran have experienced God building into their lives. They teach from experience, often through years of real life challenges with which most people could identify. The central teaching is best understood as ‘going back to the ancient basics’ rather than finding the ‘new and improved’ which often captures merely out of our curiosity.

I share these eight key practices with credit and gratitude to Ray, who has shared them with me.  These are self explanatory, but we all need to be obedient, to daily put them into use in our lives and into the life of our churches.

  1. Learn about God and experience God
  2. Submit to Jesus as only Saviour and as functional Lord
  3. Pray to God and hear from God
  4. Grow by developing character and be empowered by the Holy Spirit
  5. Repent of our sins and become emotionally whole
  6. Belonging and being discipled in the church
  7. Prepare for eternity and for end times
  8. Love and minister to our families and others

Ray reminded us of God’s dealings with Judah and the people living in Jerusalem.  “Thus says the Lord; ‘stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls’” (Jeremiah 6:16 ESV). Yet listen to how the people of Jerusalem answered. “But they said, ‘we will not walk in it.’”

Thanks Ray and Fran for making an impact on my life. Obedience is the key to living in renewal and that is done as we live in the presence of God though the indwelling Holy Spirit of God.
