Wide and Deep

Capture.PNGIt is summer time and we have an opportunity to use the time wisely by building transformational spirituality into our lives.

J. O. Sanders in his book Spiritual Leadership refers to the need for pastors to read widely and deeply.

I want to personally challenge you to read this summer from the following three categories:

  1. Read the words of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel narratives. Pray through the words of Jesus. Make His words your words.  Begin to live in the power of the words of Jesus.  His love, His grace, His wisdom, His obedience and His power will become alive in us.
  2. Read Christian biographies. Warren Wiersbe calls this “Walking With Giants.” Read biographies of people that you already admire. I have a whole shelf full of them.  Spurgeon, Moody, Knox, Carey, Taylor, Whyte, McCheyne, Whitefield, Wesley, Calvin, Augustine etc.  As we walk with these giants, we will grow to expect from God what these people in past history experienced from God.
  3. Choose one heavier book on growing in spiritual disciplines. Some choices would be John Piper, Tim Keller, Dallas Willard, A.W. Tozer, Henri Nouwen etc. Gain from their insights and let your heart and mind soar.

As we grow, so will others around us. Summer time is a good time to grow wide and deep with what we read.
