Job Description: Urban Ministries Director, Part-time
Background:
Over the past four years, we have developed a significant heart for the inner city. That heart is being expressed today with a significant number of volunteers giving time to programs that include immigrants and refugees, street-involved youth and families living in poverty. These programs and ministries require effective leadership.
Vision:
To provide a variety of opportunities for active involvement in the Hamilton core community of immigrants, refugees and those who are marginalized.
Purpose:
- To facilitate the service of Hamilton’s inner-city by the congregation at Philpott: Immigrants and refugees arriving in Canada; Hamilton’s inner-city poor.
- To manage a structure for on-going Urban Ministry commitments and opportunities at Philpott.
- To strengthen and further develop an Urban Ministries Long-Term plan of Action
Duties:
- Serve as a staff member of PMC.
- Report to the Senior Pastor.
- Provide written ministry reports through the Senior Pastor to the Board monthly.
- Coordinate all Urban Ministries through the equipping and mentoring of ministry leaders.
- Mobilize and train volunteers as needed from the congregation.
- Cooperate with local church congregations as appropriate.
- Partner with local community organizations as appropriate.
- Maintain ongoing ministries and develop new programs as the needs of the population changes and time allows.
Competencies & Education:
• Christian commitment and spiritual maturity as indicated in the Bible.
• University or College graduate, or appropriate informal training.
• Ability to influence others, manage personal time, train and mentor others.
• Passion for inner-city ministry, evidenced by either previous employment or extensive time as a volunteer.
Training in social work is considered an asset for the position.
Part-Time Hours: Twenty to twenty-five hours a week

Areas of Ongoing Ministry:
- Identify and mobilize appropriate UM Team members who will oversee the UM ministry.
- Organize and facilitate regular UM Team meetings, so that oversight by the team will be proactive.
- To support leaders with existing programs and explore new initiatives with recent immigrants and refugees (ie ESL programs, Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Cooking and Craft Groups, New-to-Canada Kids programs, Hamilton Ride for Refugees)
- To support leaders with existing programs and explore new initiatives with street-involved youth in partnership with Living Rock Ministries (ie. “Spa Night”, Parenting Class, Young Women’s Self-Esteem Group)
- Liaise with Micah House Refugee Reception Services to welcome newly-arrived refugee claimants
- Provide appropriate training for volunteers and leaders
- To support leaders in coordinating food / furniture / clothing distribution
- To support leaders in coordinating Christmas Outreach endeavors (ie. Christmas Hampers, AngelTree Gifts)
- Ongoing development of Urban Ministries Plan of Action
- Ongoing administrative tasks (ie. ensure police checks, monthly report, updated volunteer lists)
- Attend weekly staff meetings, occasional Town Hall meetings and the Annual General Meeting and the Annual Ministry Meeting of the congregation
- Provide oversight and support to Urban Ministries Intern(s) as appropriate
- Participate with the Hamilton TrueCity Movement of Churches working together as appropriate
