Looking for: Visitation Pastor, Part-Time

Purpose:

To extend pastoral care to those who cannot worship with us at Philpott each week.
To oversee the many volunteers who help us care for those folk.

Duties:

Serve as a staff member of PMC.
Report to the Senior Pastor.
Provide written ministry reports through the Senior Pastor to the Board monthly.
Coordinate all Visitation Ministries through the equipping and mentoring of volunteers.
Mobilize and train volunteers as needed from the congregation.
Maintain ongoing ministries and develop new programs as the needs of the population changes and time allows.

Competencies & Education:

Christian commitment and spiritual maturity as indicated in the Bible.
Ability to influence others, manage personal time, train and mentor others.
Passion for ministry to seniors, evidenced by either previous employment or extensive time as a volunteer.

Training in biblical studies is considered an asset for the position.

Part-Time Hours: Fifteen to twenty hours a week

Salary to be arranged, based on experience

Hospital Ministry

Visit members who are in hospital and inform the pastoral staff as necessary.
Notify Senior Pastor when he should make the next visit.

Criteria for a visit and what it entails -

where possible phone to see if it is suitable to visit that day
if person is in hospital call the hospital to make sure they are still there and have not been discharged. Also find out their location in the hospital.
A transponder provides free parking at the hospital
Take the church bulletin to the home bound or to the patient along with a church newsletter if one available.
Take church tape of service if person can handle a tape recorder and has asked for a tape

When Visiting in homes or facilities -

Describe what is going on at the church and future events coming up.
Give some requests for prayer.
Read a passage of scripture, give them a promise, ask them what they would like to have prayed for regarding their needs.
Pray with them.
Visit is usually around 20-30 minutes long. Some are lonely and want to talk and the visit could last 45-60 min.

Other opportunities in connection with visiting-

Take birthday card to person on their birthday - signed by seniors at their Tuesday meeting.
Make list of people who should receive a)lilies, b)poinsettias, c)Christmas box. The first two (a and b) given to Thelma and the latter (c) given to Dawna of seniors group who make up the boxes and fill them.
Take a communion service in chapel at Idlewyld; third Monday every two months is the previous pattern.
Call each volunteer worker at beginning of each month to record who they visited the previous month.
Make up monthly Pastoral report for the Board meeting.
Participate in funerals of homebound if asked.
Attend their birthday celebrations if possible and when asked.

Staff Team

Participate in the staff meetings as possible.
Attend monthly Elder Couple & Staff Workshops, as possible.

Background:

Over the past four years, we have developed a significant heart for the inner city. That heart is being expressed today with a significant number of volunteers giving time to programs that include immigrants and refugees, street-involved youth and families living in poverty. These programs and ministries require effective leadership.

Vision:

To provide a variety of opportunities for active involvement in the Hamilton core community of immigrants, refugees and those who are marginalized.

Purpose:

To facilitate the service of Hamilton’s inner-city by the congregation at Philpott: Immigrants and refugees arriving in Canada; Hamilton’s inner-city poor.
To manage a structure for on-going Urban Ministry commitments and opportunities at Philpott.
To strengthen and further develop an Urban Ministries Long-Term plan of Action

Duties:

Serve as a staff member of PMC.

Providing Visionary Guidance:

Relationships:

Reporting Relationship

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Ministry Strategy and Planning 15 %

In concert with Youth Pastor, develop and maintain an overall strategy and plan for Junior High ministry that fits the mission (training ambassadors for Christ) and affirms the values of the Met (biblically-faithful, mission- minded, people-developing, relationally-strong and regionally involved).

a. reviews and understands the Met’s mission and values as they apply to the JH Ministry;

b. determines current JH ministry issues and trends at the Met and beyond;

c. consults academic and ministry resources to evaluate existing and new strategies for an effective youth ministry;

d. develops an overall draft strategic plan for the youth ministry at the Met which is discussed at the Board for approval in principle, vetted at the pastoral staff level , with input from other leaders, and then submitted to the Church Board for final approval.

e. Plans and implements retreats, training venues and outreach activities.

2. Teaching 25%

Teach and oversee teaching times and activities for Junior High students that help accomplish group purposes and goals.

a. reviews teaching plans to ensure a solid Biblical content and consistency with the Met’s doctrinal position;

b. oversees teaching plans to involve other capable teachers who can communicate effectively with JH;

c. develops teaching plans to address specific needs and goals of the group

d. incorporates meaningful worship teaching and participation into teaching opportunities.

3. JH Outreach & Discipleship 10%

Develop and implement appropriate outreach and discipleship ministries for JH.

a. reviews and understands the role of outreach in the Met’s JH Ministry;

b. identifies and plans activities that are clearly “outreach” in nature, with specific goals and objectives;

c. reviews and understands the nature of discipleship in the context of the Met’s mission and the “Description of a Trained Ambassador”.

d. plans and implements activities or programs that have clear discipleship objectives;

e. mentors, disciples and counsels youth and families , and enlists and equips mentors to assist Youth in the discipleship program;

f. ensures that the Senior Pastor/Youth Pastor is consulted on JH Ministry plans early in the process.

4. Leadership Recruitment & Training 25%

Recruit and oversee a ministry team of adults to assist and lead ministries with junior high.

a. reviews the Child and Youth Protection Policy of the Met to ensure full compliance in all JH ministry activities;

b. solicits advice from staff and ministry leaders for possible candidates to approach as JH sponsors;

c. proposes JH sponsor candidates to the Board for acceptance;

d. guides and leads teams of JH sponsors to support the youth ministry;

e. conducts regular training programs for all JH workers to ensure the ministries objectives are being consistently followed, and relevant policies adhered to.

5. Family Supportive Relationships 10%

Communicate with parents (by occasional meetings, letters, and newsletters) to better assist them in their responsibility of raising their junior high young people.

a. reviews the youth ministry programs to ensure they are family-supportive and not creating wedges or divisions between youth and their parents;

b. establishes and builds effective relationships with youth and their parents;

c. communicate regularly with parents via newsletters, meetings and updates;

d. employs teaching which will strengthen and encourage family relationships and dialogue

6. Personal Ministry Development 10%

Follow a ministry development plan as directed by church leadership.

a. develop a personal training and development plan to enhance ministry performance and potential;

b. follow a reading plan to be fully acquainted with available ministry resources;

c. take appropriate action to ensure your personal ministry is broadened to provide greater flexibility in ministry assignments in the future, by accepting broader ministry tasks and opportunities on occasion.

7. Related Duties 5%

a. Assist the Senior Pastor in other areas of ministry as directed

New Life Christian Assembly of Toronto (NLCA), an affiliate of AGC, is prayerfully seeking a pastor to provide a solid Bible-based preaching and teaching ministry to a congregation drawn from various ethnic backgrounds and socio-economic positions. NLCA exists, as a body of believers in Christ, to glorify God, to make disciples by bringing people to Christ, building people up in Christ and equipping people to serve Christ.

Formed twenty years ago, NLCA is an urban church with approximately 100 congregants. As a commuting church, most of our members live within a thirty-five kilometer radius and span a broad cross-section of ages. One of our challenges is to find more effective ways of incorporating our young people into the activities of the church and equipping them to become more spirit-filled leaders. Our strength as a caring congregation is worthy of note.

We are seeking a pastor who is a mature pastor who would model and teach scriptural truths; demonstrate the leadership required to successfully challenge and equip our leadership and develop new leaders; have the ability to reach out to a multicultural community in new and meaningful ways in response to the Great Commission.

As a pastor, he would be expected to;

Inspire spiritual growth of the congregation
Place strong emphasis on youth ministry
Possess good verbal and written communication skills (preaching, teaching, facilitating)
Demonstrate good interpersonal skills (mentoring, discipling)
Foster healthy and spiritual working relationships between members and leadership, facilitating Christ-like resolution of issues that may arise.
Be committed to missions locally, nationally and globally.

Educational requirements;

Minimum Bachelor's degree in Divinity, Theology or equivalent form an approved seminary of Christian college.
Current accreditation or potential accreditation through AGC.
