Disciples Must Be Courageous

Posted by donna on March 5, 2014

Joshua 1: 9: "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

These familiar words which God spoke to Joshua as he was preparing to enter the Promised Land give us the context for another great characteristic of a true disciple. A disciple must be courageous.

Continuance is a Mark of a Disciple of Christ

Hebrews 10:39: “We are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved."

Last month we explored the topic of a disciple being one who is committed to be like their Master. The goal of the disciple is to be like Christ. These disciples are credible.

Now, we need to address the characteristic that can be called continuance. A true disciple is one that does not "shrink back" as the writer to the Hebrews teaches us in Hebrews 10: 23 “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.”

The Radical Cost of Carrying Your Cross

Posted by donna on January 14, 2014

"If you do not carry your own cross and follow me you cannot be My disciple" Luke 14: 27.

Jesus was obedient to His Father, even to the point of death on a cross.  He taught that a servant is not above His Master. Jesus knew that if He, the Master and Lord, would be required to die, then His disciples had to understand the cost of following Him.

Christmas is about Discipleship

True Disciples

I would like us to approach this Christmas Season with the understanding of what it means to be a true disciple of Christ Jesus.

Being and Making Disciples

Disciple: What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?

The word disciple occurs 269 times in the New Testament while it must be noted that the word Christian occurs only 3 times, and believer only twice. The Holy Spirit prompted the writers to define the one who is a follower of Jesus primarily as a disciple.  We can deduce from this fact that there was never meant to be a distinction between a believer in Jesus and a disciple of Jesus. Rather, the one who believes must by their very nature and level of commitment be a disciple who follows Jesus.

Mentoring new believers

"Go and make disciples" Jesus (Math. 28:19)

A spiritual discipline that is waning in the modern church is that of intentional mentoring of newer or younger believers. This is especially true when one thinks about leadership development.  Far too much is left to chance or simply taken for granted.

The store shelves are filled with books and plans on discipleship. Yet, few of us are engaged in making disciples.

Though much is being done and great things are being accomplished, my question is always, at what cost?  “What can we do better?”

What is "Dynamic Spirituality"?

Posted by donna on September 5, 2013

“But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written:  “Be holy, because I am holy.”            1 Peter 1:15, 16

A high core value of the AGC is to see churches reflect dynamic spirituality.  The word dynamic comes from the Greek word "Dunomos", from which we have the word dynamite.  Do we want a spirituality that is explosive? We sure do not want a spirituality that is destructive.  Believe it or not, some churches have a destructive view of spirituality.

Alberta Floods

A number of our AGC churches were affected by the recent flooding in Alberta.  Here is a report from one of our pastors...

The Black Diamond/Turner Valley Story

At 6:45 am on Thursday, June 20th/2013, our family was given 2 minutes to evacuate our home.  The flood waters were pressing up against our house and we barely were able to drive our van out of the driveway of our Black Diamond home.  Two days later we were allowed back on our street and to our home to see that we had 4 feet of water in our basement.  That was the common story among so many of us in our area of the province.
