Easter Message from Bill
Many religions in the world promise some type of an afterlife that includes a "better than this" type of message. What makes Christianity unique among all other forms of religion is that the promise is not only an afterlife but a "new Life" beginning now that will go on forever.
One day Jesus travels to Bethany to visit the grieving sisters Mary and Martha. Their brother Lazarus has died three days before. Mary responds that if Jesus had been there, Lazarus would still be alive. She believed in Jesus power to perform miracles, but only on this side of death. Martha responds with typical theology... "Lazarus will live again in the afterlife".
Jesus replies that He is Life itself. Anyone who believes in Him will never die. Jesus uses these words as a present reality, not a future hope alone.
Jesus in John 3 describes this as a new birth... "You must be born again". He explains this to a confused Jewish leader as a present reality. It is being born again by the Spirit of God. It is finding in His offer of reconciliation to God through sins forgiven, a regeneration that results in immediate new life. A transformed life lives in a world that remains in rebellion against God. This new life is only possible because of Easter. It is a direct result of the resurrection of Jesus three days after Christ died for the sins of the world.
This is the great news we celebrate at Easter! Not only a hope for the future, but the reality that a personal confession of faith in Christ as Saviour allows us to receive a new nature; a new Spirit, and a regenerated soul. This new life begins right away. It is transformational. It is everlasting and it is real. It is holy.
As we celebrate the glory of God at Easter this month let's continue to announce the good news of new life right now.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
