KKevin_Mahons_book.jpgevin Mahon (Senior Pastor of Peoples Church, Sarnia-Lambton, ON) has just published “Pastoring with Elders: Together we make one really good Christian

The elders at Peoples Church have had a growing influence on other AGC congregations and have frequently been asked to share their effective shepherding-elder model. So, how do you grow elders? Many pastors are looking for another program or quick fix to accomplish this end. However, the answer is rooted in the theology of ministry and the need to focus on the biblical mandate given to pastors rather than the tyranny of expectations inherent in pastor-led churches.

This book is designed to help senior pastors walk through a process of deconstructing their understanding of pastoring and redirect them to a focused ministry within a plurality of shepherd-elders.

I've read the book and its great even if I see myself in some places throughout the book. My friend Kevin not only outlines the problem but offers practical solutions and applications that can work in the local church. I love the practical ways he suggest for building men in your church. My confession, I've always sought to build men in my church, but for what ever reason never took men with me visiting and showing them how to do the pastoral things. Ouch.

He might be a little bit over the top when he describes the modern Pastor who is expected to do everything, but he makes a valid point. We spend far too much time on running the church and running in circles and far too little time in the Word and on our knees. (Check out the "6:4 Fellowship" website).

I will adapt the principles in this book but it is going to serve as a template, a model for preparing our church for the future.
